🏛️ A City of Many Cultures

Chania is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe. Built on the site of the ancient Minoan city of Kydonia, it has been shaped by Minoans, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, Ottomans, and modern Greeks — each leaving their mark on its architecture, cuisine, and soul.

Through the Ages
Minoan Era

Ancient Kydonia (~3000 BC)

The city's Minoan roots go back over 5,000 years. Kydonia was a major trading hub, and you can still see ancient ruins scattered throughout the modern city — especially around Kastelli hill.

Venetian Era

La Canea (1252–1645)

The Venetians ruled for nearly 400 years and transformed Chania into 'La Canea' — a jewel of Mediterranean architecture. They built the famous Old Harbour, the iconic lighthouse, grand palazzos, and massive fortifications.

Ottoman Era

Ottoman Rule (1645–1898)

After a bloody two-month siege, the Ottomans took Chania in 1645. They added minarets, hammams, and mosques — most famously the Kioutsouk Hasan Mosque at the Old Harbour. A distinctive fusion of East and West took shape.

Modern Era

Liberation & Beyond (1898–Today)

Chania became the capital of autonomous Crete in 1898 and was unified with Greece in 1913. Today, Chania is a vibrant city that honors its layered past while welcoming visitors from around the world.

Must-Visit Historic Spots

The Old Venetian Lighthouse

The iconic symbol of Chania. Walk along the harbor pier to reach it — the view back to the city is unforgettable, especially at sunset.

Venetian · 14th century

The Old Harbour

The beating heart of Chania. A horseshoe-shaped harbor lined with colorful Venetian buildings, tavernas, and cafes. A must-visit at any time of day or night.

Ottoman · 17th century

Kioutsouk Hasan Mosque

The iconic domed mosque at the Old Harbour is one of the best-preserved Ottoman buildings in Crete. It now hosts art exhibitions and is a gorgeous photo spot.

Venetian · 16th century

Venetian Walls & Firkas Fortress

Walk along the old fortifications that once protected the city. The golden stone walls glow beautifully at sunset. Firkas Fortress houses the Maritime Museum of Crete.

Old Town

The Old Town Alleys

Get lost in the narrow streets of the old town — pastel-colored houses, bougainvillea-draped walls, tiny taverns, and artisan shops. Every corner tells a story.

📢 Note: Municipal Market The historic Municipal Market (Agora) is currently under renovation and not accessible to visitors. We'll update this guide once it reopens!
🌟 Pro tip The old town is best explored in the early morning or late afternoon — the light is magical and the crowds are smaller. Tap any spot above to open it in Google Maps!
